Deadly house fire in Cornelius near Forest Grove

Forest Grove Fire and Rescue said an adult died due to fire conditions and was pronounced deceased on the scene.

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — A person has died in a house fire in Washington County in Cornelius, according to Forest Grove Fire and Rescue. 

On Nov. 6 at around 6:55 p.m., the Cornelius Fire Department responded to reports of a house fire near 300 South Alpine Street in Cornelius, located along Tualatin Valley Highway between Forest Grove and Hillsboro.

Fire crews arrived at around 7 p.m., where they found a small, detached structure fully engulfed in flames, with reports of a family member asleep inside. Crews were able to quickly put the fire out and stop the flames from spreading to nearby homes, Forest Grove Fire and Rescue said.

While fire crews were searching the inside of the small home, they found a person and attempted life saving measures. Crews determined that the victim, pronounced dead at the scene, had died due to the fire conditions, according to Forest Grove Fire and Rescue.

Fire investigators with the Forest Grove Fire and Rescue and the Washington County Sheriff's Office are working to determine a cause for the fire. 

The structure was not equipped with working smoke alarms, and officials will not be releasing the identity of the victim. 

"We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the individual that lost their life," stated Forest Grove Fire and Rescue in a statement to KGW.

The Cornelius Fire Department was assisted on scene by Forest Grove Fire & Rescue, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue, Gaston Fire District, Washington County Sheriff's Office, Forest Grove Police Department and American Medical Response (AMR).
