PORTLAND, Oregon — Oregonians may have a new license plate option at the DMV. The Oregon Coast Aquarium announced on Tuesday that drivers can purchase vouchers for its puffin plate.
Artist Cam Mullins designed the license plate, which shows a tufted puffin looking through water at fish swimming below. Tufted puffins are native to Oregon and nest on rocky islands and headlands.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium needs to sell 3,000 vouchers for the license plates can move into production. If that happens, the puffin plates would be available at the DMV in about six to seven months. Vouchers can be purchased through the Oregon Coast Aquarium's website.
Remaining funds will support the Oregon Coast Aquarium's rehabilitation and conservation efforts, the 32-year-old nonprofit said, which plans to double its capacity to provide critical care to endangered marine life, such as sea turtles and northern fur seals; the Oregon Coast Aquarium is set to construct a new rehab center for wildlife in 2025.
