SALEM, Ore. — Driver license, vehicle tags and registration fees and many other Oregon DMV service costs are all set to increase Jan. 1.
Most service fees will only increase by $3-10, but a handful will more than double. A driver’s test for non-commercial vehicles (Class C) will go from $9 to $45. The cost of a commercial driver’s skill test will increase from $70 to $145.
The fee increases are a part of House Bill 2100, which passed this year in the Oregon Legislature. The bill aims to help the DMV recover costs and avoid service reductions. Most of the service fee gains and increases by the Oregon DMV over the last 20 years have gone to transportation projects throughout the state and not toward operating costs, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).
ODOT said the fee increases will help the DMV recover costs, particularly on time-consuming services like driver tests. Each test costs the DMV $123 to provide the service. The agency says the rise in its service cost will help make up the gap.
“We have a structural funding problem that needs a long-term solution,” stated Amy Joyce, DMV Administrator. “These fee increases will help us carry the cost burden for a while and allow us to continue to provide DMV services without much interruption. We look forward to working with our partners in the Oregon Legislature to identify long-term solutions to our funding problems.”
