PORTLAND, Ore. — After sidestepping a foreclosure auction in September, the graffiti-covered, former Gordon's Fireplace Shop is headed back to the auction block next month.
Located near Interstate 84, the 27,000-square-foot property, built in 1918, is set at a starting bid at $225,000, with the auction scheduled Dec. 16 through Dec. 18.
A KGW investigation found that despite plans for renovation, the building has fallen into disrepair, generating neighbor complaints. Between June 2023 and May 2024, the police have been called twice for incidents at the building, and around 31 calls were made due to incidents within 200 feet of the property — mostly for disorder, according to city of Portland report recommending foreclosure.
After the building's owners racked up around $150,000 in liens for code enforcement violations, the Portland City Council foreclosed on the property in June and scheduled it for auction. The building at Northeast 33rd Avenue and Broadway had been bought in 2016 by developers looking to turn it into office space and retail, then housing and retail, but the project never got off the ground.
