1M Ore. hunters, fishers hit by license data breach

More than a million hunters and fishers in Oregon had personal information stolen during a hack of the website holding license information last month.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- More than a million hunters and fishers in Oregon had personal information stolen during a hack of the website holding license information last month.

The number is even larger in Washington, where 2.4 million people had their information stolen.

Active Outdoors, the company hired by the states to run their licensing, said its system was hacked in August. They discovered the breach on Aug. 22. The affected files had hunting and fishing license information from June 2007 and earlier.

The company is sending letters to anyone who might have personal information exposed by the attack.

Since there is no state seal, some may think its an ad or a sales letter. But, Rick Swart, spokesman for Oregon’s Department of Fish and Wildlife says it’s a real warning.

“We've had some questions, is this letter legitimate? It is legit and we want them to take it seriously and we want to apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. I got one of these letters and it doesn't feel good,” he said.

Active Outdoors is giving two years’ worth of identity repair to anyone who finds their information was used to create fake identities or other fraud.
