PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Fire & Rescue crews responded to reports of a barbeque fire around 4:40 a.m. Saturday morning in the Humboldt neighborhood of North Portland.

Crews found one home where fire was rapidly spreading to the back of the house and a neighboring home.

Shortly after, the Battalion Chief called in additional crews to assist and upgraded it to a "2 alarm" fire.

Crews split into 2 teams with the "A" team using a hose to tackle the fire on the outside, and the "B" team extending a hose to fight the fire in the first house and search for victims.

By 5:40 a.m., crews reported they had extinguished all active fires and were moving on to the "overhaul phase," searching for any remaining fire dangers.

Officials said crews searched both homes "extensively" for victims and made sure everyone was outside safely. Unfortunately, two pets died from inhaling too much smoke.

The Red Cross was called in to assist the victims with any immediate needs related to their housing.

Portland Fire & Rescue determined the fire was accidental, but they're still investigating the specific cause.
