PORTLAND, Oregon — Tens of thousands of people living in North Portland are one step closer to gaining a new city swimming pool. Commissioner Dan Ryan has directed $59.8 million in additional funding for the new North Portland Aquatic Center, according to Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R).

The aquatic center is still in the planning phase and will be constructed in Northgate Park, a site that was selected over the summer. The project has been in the works in the years after Columbia Pool shut down in 2020 and never reopened. Columbia Pool was closed due to the pandemic, then in 2021, inspectors found major safety hazards with the nearly 100-year-old facility.

"A new, full-service aquatic center in North Portland is needed, and this funding means the finish line is in sight," said Ryan, who oversees Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R). "The location was selected because of its proximity to schools. It’s about ensuring our kids learn how to swim at a young age, and it will ultimately save lives," he said.

The new aquatic center is estimated to cost $102 million, and the additional funding means $91.5 million of that amount has been secured, according to PP&R. Other funding for the project includes former Portland Parks Commissioner Carmen Rubio's allocation of $16.6 million and $15 million from a state grant.

"The North Portland Aquatic Center will be accessible, spacious and fun," said Adena Long, the director of PP&R. "And most importantly, it will be an essential place to learn how to swim."

PP&R plans to give an update on the project timeline after a new design team is on board in spring 2024.

Ryan has also requested that the PP&R work with the community to determine improvements at Columbia Park and Columbia Park Annex.
