ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) - A woman accused of killing one daughter and injuring another at Cannon Beach has returned to jail after a monthlong stay at the Oregon State Hospital.

Jessica Smith was sent to the mental hospital to determine if she can understand the nature of the court proceedings. Clatsop County Judge Cindee Matyas found reason to doubt Smith's mental fitness based on a suicide attempt in jail and an inconclusive report from a court-appointed psychologist.

The Daily Astorian reports the hospital will send its findings to the court; a hearing on the results is scheduled for later this month.

The Vancouver, Washington, resident has pleaded not guilty to murder in the 2014 drowning of her toddler and not guilty to attempted murder in the slashing of her teenager. Her trial is scheduled for June 2017.
