Neighbors call for change in wake of West Seattle murder

WEST SEATTLE Roughly 75 people stood on the shoreline in West Seattle Sunday night, calling for change after a mysterious murder.

Greggette Guy s body was found floating in the water near Emma Schmitz park last Monday, after police believe she went for a walk the night before. Detectives have since ruled her case a homicide, but have no suspects.

We need to take the neighborhood back, says Judy Bentley, who lives along Beach Drive, and organized a candlelight vigil and march along the waterfront.

She had a unexpected visitor: Greggette's father, Gregg Smith.

Smith says he had walked the same park path several times over the last few years with his daughter, Greggette. He told the crowd he wasn t with her Sunday night, but she often liked to come to the spot to storm watch.

He thanked the people who came for honoring his daughter s memory, and urged Seattle to install new lighting and cut off the park after dark.

Seattle Police have said very little publicly about the investigation and have not named a suspect in the murder. SPD plain clothed detectives were in the park Sunday night, stopping joggers and asking people if they saw anything suspicious one week ago.
