PORTLAND, Ore. — Multnomah County reported on Monday that four people are suspected to have died from heat-related causes amid the ongoing, record-breaking heat wave.
Three of the people who died, all men, were Multnomah County residents. The fourth death, also a man, was a Clackamas County resident but he died in a Portland-area hospital.
The deaths were reported as temperatures in Portland climbed around 100 degrees. All four people who died were men.
The first person was a 87-year-old man who was discovered dead in the 97230 ZIP code, Multnomah County said. That ZIP code covers parts of Northeast Portland and North Gresham. His death was reported on Friday, July 5, when Portland saw a high temperature of 99 degrees.
The second death happened on Saturday, July 6. The 33-year-old man was a resident of Clackamas County, who was taken to a Portland-area hospital where he died, Multnomah County said.
The third death, a 64-year-old man was reported Sunday, July 7 in the 97206 ZIP code in Southeast Portland.
A fourth, a 75-year-old man was found dead in the 97216 ZIP code in Southeast Portland; his death was also reported on Sunday.
The Multnomah Medical Examiner's Office is investigating. It could take several weeks or months for investigators to confirm the four men's causes of death. Additional tests and investigations will determine whether their deaths were heat-related.
