PORTLAND, Ore. — On May 18, 1980, the Northwest and the world witnessed one of the largest natural disasters in modern times.
On that day, Mount St. Helens of the Cascade range in the Pacific Northwest exploded, killing dozens of people and causing devastating damage to the surrounding communities.
