Motorcyclist dead after colliding with pickup truck in Salem

SALEM, Ore. — A man is dead after colliding with a pickup truck in Salem on Thursday.

Salem police were called to the scene around 4:45 p.m. According to the Salem Police Department, the Salem Police Traffic Team's preliminary investigation revealed a 22-year-old man, William Dale Ryan of Salem, had been driving east on his motorcycle on Market Street, approaching 23rd Street northeast. 

A 26-year-old woman, Tania Vargas Campos of Salem, was driving a pickup truck west on Market Street when she turned south on 23rd Street. Ryan then collided with the truck's passenger door, police said. Witnesses said that the motorcycle was "traveling at a high rate of speed."

Ryan was pronounced at the scene. 

Police said Campos remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Market Street between 21st and 24th streets northeast was closed during the investigation. 

The Salem Police Department said that the traffic team has responded to 15 major traffic collisions, all of them deaths, to date in 2024.
