89-year-old man who disappeared from Portland hospital found safe after statewide alert was issued

A statewide Silver Alert was issued for a missing 89-year-old man, Lewis Fuqua, who has dementia and congestive heart failure.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A missing 89-year-old man who disappeared from a Portland hospital was found safe, hours after a statewide Silver Alert was issued Saturday.

Lewis Fuqua was found in Washington County after a car crash in the late afternoon, after which community members called law enforcement. Fuqua not injured, and he is now back with his family and getting a medical evaluation, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB). 

Around 5:30 a.m., Fuqua left Providence Portland Medical Center to move his car around and did not return. Along with having congestive heart failure, Fuqua has dementia and comes confused during night hours, police said. 

Fuqua is described as a white man, who is 5 feet, 3 inches, and weighs 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black fleece Salvation Army vest over a dark sweatshirt and blue jeans and walks with a cane or a walker. He may be driving his red Toyota Corolla.

Police said that Fuqua used to live in Scappoose, so he could be in the area. He was also planning on attending an event with the Salvation Army at 5325 North Williams Avenue.
