A 41-year-old man was arrested for drunk driving and fleeing the scene of a fatal crash that killed a 77-year-old woman Monday in Marion County, police said.
The crash happened at 7:27 a.m. on Highway 99E at the intersection of Howell Prairie Road, near the town of Gervais.
The suspect, Luis Herrera Alvarez, was driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser north on Highway 99 when he crashed into a Subaru Impreza, which was stopped on Howell Prairie Road waiting to turn south onto Highway 99. The impact of the crash pushed the Impreza into a Chevrolet Malibu, which was also stopped on Howell Prairie Road, waiting to turn north onto Highway 99.
A passenger in the Impreza, Vaselisa Reutov, was taken to a hospital and later died from injuries suffered in the crash.
Herrera Alvarez ran from the crash scene on foot. Officers later found him on Boones Ferry Road and arrested him. He is being held at the Marion County Jail and faces charges of DUII, reckless driving and felony hit and run.
Herrera's blood-alcohol level after the crash was 0.17 percent, above the legal limit of 0.08.
