MILWAUKIE, Ore — The body of a man who went underwater April 16 while kayaking in the Willamette River has been recovered.

The man, 27-year-old Saul Gallegos Ruiz of Happy Valley, was kayaking near Elk Rock Island in the Milwaukie area.

A private underwater search specialist from Idaho helped the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office recover the body at a depth of around 75 feet on April 27.

Witnesses said Ruiz was struggling in the water after his boat flipped. Several people swam out to try to help him, but by the time they reached his kayak he was nowhere to be found.
