Salem officer shoots man after report he was pointing gun at person in parking lot

Salem police said the suspect pointed "what appeared to be a gun" at an officer before the officer shot him.

SALEM, Ore. — A police officer shot a man after police said he pointed "what appeared to be a gun" at the officer Thursday afternoon in Salem, the Salem Police Department (SPD) reported.

The officer was responding to a report that a man had pointed a gun at a person in the parking lot of a Popeyes restaurant on Lancaster Drive Northeast in Salem and was trying to stop drivers.

The report came in around 4:45 p.m. Thursday. Police said a witness flagged down the officer, who was in the area, and gave him the man's description. When the officer found the man walking near Coral Avenue and Wolverine Street Northeast, police said the man pointed "what appeared to be a gun" at the officer, who was still in his car. The officer then shot the man.

The man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, according to police. The officer was not hurt.

Oregon State Police has taken the lead in investigating the shooting under Marion County's use of deadly force plan. The Marion County District Attorney’s office will assist in the investigation.

Police did not identify the man who was shot or say whether he will be arrested or face any charges after he's released from the hospital. The officer who shot the man was also identified.
