Man arrested after stabbing in Portland's Old Town neighborhood

Detectives are still searching for the knife used in the assault, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A Portland man is facing several charges, including first-degree assault, after the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) and Oregon State Police Troopers arrested him in Old Town early Sunday morning.

At around 2:08 a.m. Sunday, PPB responded to reports of a stabbing on the sidewalk near Northwest 6th Avenue and Northwest Glisan Street, according to PPB.

When officers arrived they found a man who had stab wounds, and they started performing lifesaving measures. The man was taken to the hospital and is expected to live, said Portland police.

Officers found during a preliminary investigation that the stabbing started due to a scuffle between two groups. A gun was found at the scene, but police said there is no evidence shots were fired during the fight.

The suspect, Yimer J. Funez-Cruz, 21, of Portland, left the area before officers arrived. Witnesses were able to provide police with a description of Funez-Cruz and his direction of travel, which helped PPB search for the suspect.

At 2:28 p.m., an officer spotted Funez-Cruz near Southwest Broadway and Southwest Yamhill Street. Funez-Cruz took off but Oregon State Police troopers were in the area. They helped chase and arrest Funez-Cruz at Southwest Park Avenue and Southwest Taylor Street. A taser was also used on Funez-Cruz, who was not injured, according to PPB.

Funez-Cruz was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center, facing charges of first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and menacing.

Detectives are still searching for the knife used in the assault, police said.
