Popular Portland chef injured after falling on trail in Columbia River Gorge

Jeff Chow's food cart, Mama Chow's Kitchen, is temporarily closed as he recovers from serious injuries after falling off the trail at Wahclella Falls.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Mama Chow's Kitchen has become a go-to spot for those who love wings, noodles, dumplings and the owner, Jeff Chow. But right now, the Southeast Portland food truck is closed, and Chow is in the emergency surgery recovery unit at Oregon Health and Science University.

"I didn't know what to feel. I didn't know what was going on, but I was in pain," said Chow from his hospital bed at OHSU.

Chow took a serious fall on Tuesday while hiking with friends at Wahclella Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. He slipped and fell 10 feet, landing headfirst on a rock outcropping.

"I don't remember much of the fall; I just remember waking up on the rocks, and just people calling my name," he said Friday.

After being airlifted to Portland, Chow is doing remarkably well, considering he suffered a depressed skull fracture that required surgery on Wednesday. He also has six badly broken ribs and a fractured shoulder blade.

True to his nature, his friends said the first thing he was concerned about after he regained consciousness on Tuesday was his dog and his customers.

Cart and catering responsibilities are on hold for now, with Chow’s loved ones rallying to support a man known for his kind spirit, serving up food and helping others in any way possible, including returning to cook for his valued customers and friends.

“I don't cook for any other reason; I just hope to make someone's day with a meal, and the fact that people are showing so much love and support just means a lot to me,” he said.

If you want to offer support, there is a GoFundMe set up to help cover lost income and medical expenses that insurance doesn't cover.
