PORTLAND, Ore. — Multnomah County's first new permanent library in over a decade will soon open its doors. The new Holgate Library will open to the public on Saturday, July 13.
The $27 million two-story library sits on the site of the original building on Southeast Holgate Boulevard. It closed for construction in 2022, after Multnomah County voters approved a capital bond project in 2020 to build and modernize library buildings.
The 21,000-square-foot building is triple the size of the original, making it one of the largest library buildings in the county. It's also the most energy efficient library ever built in Multnomah County.

Based on community input, the new library includes a long list of new features: a large learning and play space for children and families, a teen room for games and homework, multiple rooms for meetings and workshops, modernized self-checkout stations, and an outdoor plaza and outdoor lockers for 24/7 contactless pick-up.
The new Holgate Library is one of eight library projects underway in Multnomah County, including a new East County Library and Northwest Library.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held Saturday morning for the new Holgate Library, kicking off three days of community events full of music and dancing at the library. The events will take place between July 13-15. For a full schedule of activities, click here.
