Hillsboro High School student fatally shot at weekend house party

A student from Liberty High School was injured in the shooting, according to a letter from the school's interim principal.

HILLSBORO, Ore. — A 17-year-old Hillsboro High School student was shot and killed at a house party over the weekend, the school's principal announced in a letter to parents on Sunday night. A student from Liberty High School, 16, was injured, according to a letter from the school's interim principal.

According to the Hillsboro Police Department, at around 7:50 p.m. on Saturday, two teen boys were shot on Northeast 34th Place. Officers confirmed that the 17-year-old was critically injured, while the 16-year-old was treated on-scene and taken to the hospital by a family member.

Specially-trained counselors and mental health specialists from the Hillsboro School District will be on the Hillsboro High campus on Monday and available to talk to students.

The student's names and the circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been released, but an investigation is ongoing, the Hillsboro Police Department said in a statement. No arrests have been made as of Monday morning.

Hillsboro School District Superintendent Travis Reiman held a news conference Monday morning to address the incident.

Staff plan to inform the students about the death during classes Monday morning, Principal Cary Meier said in the letter to Hillsboro High families.

"We encourage you to send students to school Monday, as grieving and processing feelings together as a community is the best way to handle tragic situations," she said.

Hillsboro High said the shooting is under police investigation and information is limited. The police department expects to release additional details later this week.

In the meantime, law enforcement and additional district office staff will be at both schools on Monday.

"Our student’s passing is heartbreaking for all of us," Meier added. "It will take time to heal, but we will get through it together. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to their family, friends, and all who knew them."

Liberty High's interim principal shared his condolences in a letter to families.

"While we are relieved that our student will recover, we grieve with the Hilhi and our broader Hillsboro School District community over the senseless violence," said Roger Will, Liberty High's interim principal.

The district shared grief and loss resources on its site.
