There's a school in Oregon that costs nearly $50,000 in yearly tuition.

No, it's not a four-year college. The institution is one of Oregon's top private high school schools, as ranked by Pittsburgh-based researcher Niche. What's more, the school doesn't make the top 10 of the researcher's rankings. (The second- and third-most expensive such schools, though, do).

The full rankings are detailed in the slides below.

Niche bases its grades on SAT/ACT composite scores, which comprised 30 percent of the rating. The quality of colleges that students subsequently attend accounts for another 25 percent while the percentage of students who pass at least one AP exam comprises 10 percent.

The culture and diversity levels, based on survey responses from students and parents, contributes another 10 percent, as does parent and student surveys on whether the schools help prepare matriculators for college.

The percentage of students enrolled in at least one AP course, the percentage of students going on to attend four-year colleges and the school's graduation rate each contribute 5 percent to the grade. Much of the information is collected from the U.S. Department of Education.

Among the 39 rated private high schools:

  • Eight received overall A-plus ratings.
  • Fifteen of the schools are in Portland while nine are in the city's suburbs.
  • Six of the top ten are in Portland.
