GRESHAM, Ore. – A Gresham bakery that made national headlines after refusing to serve a same-sex couple announced that it has closed.

Sweet Cakes by Melissa announced the closure on Facebook at the end of September.

“We have closed Sweet Cakes. We appreciate everyone’s continued prayer and support!”

In 2013, the owners of the bakery, Aaron and Melissa Klein, refused to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple, Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer, citing conflicts with their religious beliefs.

The couple filed a complaint with the Department of Justice and the state of Oregon eventually ordered the Kleins to pay $135,000 to Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer. The couple told KGW in September that they still have not received the payment. The case currently sits in the Oregon Court of Appeals.

A crowd-funding website set up for the Kleins has raised more than $400,000.

The Sweet Cakes by Melissa shop closed in 2013 but the Kleins still made and sold cakes from home before announcing last week's closure.
