PORTLAND, Ore. — The former head football coach of Westview High School in Beaverton was arrested on 12 counts of harassment following accusations of waking up players on his team by shaking and slapping them at a overnight football camp.

During a multi-day football camp on the Linfield University campus, McMinnville police officers responded to do a "welfare check" early in the morning. Officers said initial information pointed to head coach Jamal Jones of the Westview team waking up students by slapping and shaking them while they were still asleep.
That same day, the Beaverton School District said Jones had been put on administrative leave pending an investigation. The next day, Westview's principal said Jones had resigned.
Jones led the football team at the school in the Beaverton School District for just one year.
A parent told KGW she was furious, saying Jones hit her son.
"I do not think that a class B misdemeanor is what he deserves," said Tiare Kurkowski Afoa, who has two sons on the Westview football team. "I believe in my heart, wholeheartedly, looking at the videos and knowing what he did... I believe that he should have assault charges and should have jail time. I also believe he should lose his job and any part of him being a coach ever again. "
McMinnville Police Department said Jones turned himself in on Wednesday, nearly three weeks after the incident. He was processed in the Yamhill County Jail and is expected to be released pending a future court date, a common situation in these cases, MPD said.
Jones is also a police officer with the Hillsboro Police Department. Following the allegations, the Hillsboro Police Department placed Jones on leave pending the investigation.
Prior to coaching in the Beaverton School District, Jones previously was the head coach at Franklin High School in Portland and at Arcata High School in California, where he was the head coach for six years, according to the Westview High School website.
Correction: A previous headline incorrectly stated that Jones is a former McMinnville police officer. Jones is currently on leave from his job as a Hillsboro police officer.
