2 men killed in fatal crash while fleeing Gresham police near street takeover mission identified

Officers say the driver did not pull over for a traffic stop, eventually crashing into a utility pole and rolling, killing two.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland police are investigating a deadly single-car crash that happened late Friday night, killing two of the people inside the car.

According to police, the incident began at around 11:55 p.m. when two Gresham Police officers said they noticed a car speeding and driving recklessly in the area near Northeast 122nd and Hancock streets.

The officers were assisting with a multi-agency mission to address an illegal street takeover during the weekend when they spotted the driver. The officers said they then activated their overhead lights and attempted a traffic stop.

The driver didn't stop, prompting the officers to start a chase and call in an Air Support Unit.

Another group of officers was working to place a spike strip to flatten the car's tires when it was reported the driver had crashed into a utility pole at Northeast 122nd Avenue and Marx Street and rolled over.

Emergency medical assistance was called in, and medics pronounced two people in the car dead at the scene. A third person was transported to a nearby hospital by an ambulance.

On Tuesday, Portland police identified the two men killed as 22-year-old Malcolm T. Braman, who was the driver, and 36-year-old Nicholas P. McGuire. Both of their families have been notified, Portland police said.

The Portland Police Bureau said their Traffic Division Major Crash Team is investigating the crash. Northeast 122nd Avenue was temporarily closed between Northeast Shaver and Marx streets during the investigation.
