PORTLAND, Ore. — A driver died early Saturday morning after his vehicle rolled down an embankment in South Portland, landing on the southbound Interstate 5 offramp from the Marquam Bridge.
Police officers from the Central Precinct responded at 12:43 a.m. to a crash near the intersection of South Gibbs Street and South Hood Avenue, which runs parallel to the I-5 offramp at the top of the embankment, according to a news release from the Portland Police Bureau. The driver of the vehicle was taken to a hospital, where he later died. There was also a passenger in the vehicle, who was not injured.
Police said on Saturday afternoon that the available details about the crash were limited, and that the Traffic Investigations Unit is still investigating. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to email the unit at crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 23-269267.
The crash was the fourth traffic fatality in the Portland and Salem metro areas in just a few hours Friday night.
A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in Gresham at around 7 p.m. and later died from their injuries, and a fatal crash a little over an hour later in Washington County closed part of Southeast Cornelius Pass Road near Aloha. About an hour after that, the Oregon Department of Transportation warned that I-5 southbound would be closed for several hours north of Salem due to a third fatal crash involving a driver and a pedestrian.
Additionally, Oregon State Police announced Saturday that a family of four from Troutdale were all killed in a three-vehicle crash on Thursday on Highway 97 in Redmond.
This is a developing story and will be updated if more details become available.
