Deputy, police officer shoot and kill man accused of holding family hostage in Happy Valley

Family members called 911 and told dispatchers that the man had barricaded himself inside the house with his wife and two children.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A Clackamas County deputy and a Beaverton police officer shot and killed a man accused of holding his family hostage in their home in Happy Valley Monday evening.

Family members called 911 and told dispatchers that the man had barricaded himself inside the house with his wife and two children. They also said he was armed with a knife and had poured gasoline inside the home on Southeast Westview Court.

Clackamas County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) SWAT and Crisis Negotiation teams responded to the home around 8:20 p.m. The Washington County Tactical Negotiations Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit also responded.

The man "made an imminent threat toward his family" after several hours of negotiations, CCSO said. Law enforcement entered the home to rescue the woman and the two children. A deputy assigned to CCSO's SWAT team and a Beaverton police officer with the Washington County Tactical Negotiations team shot and killed the man when they entered the home, CCSO said. The man has not been identified.

CCSO said the woman and children got out safely.

The Clackamas County deputy and the Beaverton police officer have been placed on administrative leave, which is each agency's standard protocol. Their names have not been released.

The Clackamas County Interagency Major Crimes Team and the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office are investigating. Detectives from Oregon City and Molalla are leading the Major Crime Team's investigation, with help from multiple agencies in the region.

This is a developing story and it will be updated when more information becomes available.
