PORTLAND, Oregon — Editor's note: An initial statement from Portland police indicated that the person who died in this crash was a woman. They have since corrected that info to KGW, confirming that the victim was a man.
A man was killed and a woman injured during a crash in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood of Southeast Portland late Wednesday night, according to Portland police.
Officers responded to the crash at 10:50 p.m. near Southeast Holgate Boulevard and Southeast 136th Avenue. The vehicle hit a tree and was significantly damaged. Two people were inside the vehicle and police said that one of them, a man, was killed. First responders also took a woman to the hospital with serious injuries. Portland police said her "prognosis is unknown."
The Portland Police Traffic Division Major Crash Team is investigating the crash and have not released the cause. Police officials have yet to confirm the identities of either victim.
Portland police shut down Southeast Holgate Boulevard between 134th and 136th avenues overnight, but the road has since reopened.

The crash marks the the 51st traffic-related death in the city of Portland so far this year. If traffic deaths continue at the same pace for the remainder of the year, 2023 will exceed the total of 63 deaths per year in both 2021 and 2022, which was already a three-decade high.
