PORTLAND, Ore. — One person has died after being stabbed on a MAX train platform on Christmas Eve, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).
Around 6:30 p.m. Portland police responded to reports of a stabbing incident on a MAX train.
There was an altercation involving an adult male victim at the MAX platform at the Providence Park Transit Station, confirmed to KGW by PPB. The victim got "back on or got on" a train that eventually stopped at Goose Hollow, where officers responded.
First responders delivered aid, and an ambulance transported the man to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, PBB said. No arrests have been made at this time.
"Investigators do not believe that there is any threat to the public," according to PPB.
Around 6:55 p.m., TriMet sent out a service alert stating that there was a "disruption" for the MAX Blue and Red lines due to "ongoing police activity" near Goose Hollow and Southwest Jefferson Street. This resulted in delays as well as shuttle buses serving stations between Goose Hollow/Southwest Jefferson Street, and Galleria/Southwest 10th Avenue.
TriMet released a statement on Sunday evening about the incident, saying that the agency is working with police to investigate.
"It's believed the victim entered a train following the initial attack. We share condolences with those who are dealing with this loss tonight and loved ones of the person who died," TriMet said.
As of late Sunday night, MAX Blue and Red lines are still facing disruptions due to the ongoing police investigation. TriMet have shuttle buses serving stations between Sunset Transit Center and Galleria/Southwest 10th Avenue. Riders should expect delays and check trimet.org/alerts before traveling, TriMet said.
Detectives from the Homicide Detail, with criminalists from the Forensic Evidence Division, are investigating the scene.
In a statement, Portland Police Chief Bob Day said, “My heart goes out to the victim’s family and friends.”
He continued, “For someone to lose their life in a violent crime is unacceptable. For it to happen on Christmas Eve is exponentially worse. I can assure the community our officers and detectives are doing everything in their power on this holiday to track down those responsible.”
