Mount Bachelor skier dies from suffocation under snow

An avid skier was found unresponsive under snow at the Mount Bachelor Ski Resort.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A skier at Mount Bachelor Ski Resort in Bend was found dead Wednesday afternoon in the West Bowl ski area.

Deschutes County Sheriff's Office identified the man as 58-year-old Robert Harrington, an avid skier. According to the news release, Harrington had gotten off a ski lift at the resort and was found 30 minutes later under snow and unresponsive.

The person who found Harrington began doing CPR. When Mount Bachelor Ski Patrol and Bend Fire Medics arrived, they transported Harrington to the onsite medical facility but "resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful," the sheriff's office said.

The Deschutes County Medical Examiner said that Harrington had suffocated from being immersed in snow.
