SISTERS, Ore. – Six people were hospitalized Christmas morning after a crash on Highway 20, just east of Santiam Junction.

A Chevy Tahoe driven by Maria Sandoval, 42, of Salem, crossed the center line at about 10 a.m. when Sandoval lost control of the SUV on the icy road, according to Lt. Bill Fugate of Oregon State Police.

The Chevy collided with a westbound Dodge pickup nearly head-on, Fugate said.

A doctor, driving by the crash, stopped and provided medical attention to the injured passengers before medics arrived, Fugate said.

Four passengers in Sandoval’s Chevy were taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.

The driver of the Dodge, Richard L. Barge, 44, and the passenger, Kimberly Barge, 40, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The Terrebonne residents were also taken to St. Charles Medical Center.

Highway 20 was closed for several hours.
