PORTLAND, Ore. — A man's body was found in a burned Southeast Portland warehouse three days after a massive fire, investigators said.
Investigators on Monday learned that a man was at or near the warehouse when the fire started, Portland Fire & Rescue said. Searchers found a man's remains later in the day.
"Several witnesses said they saw an individual in that area, we don't know for sure it's the same person," said PF&R spokesman Lt. Rich Chatman. "Everything indicates it is."
Investigators "received information that would indicate the individual was using an area just outside of the affected warehouse for temporary shelter," according to a news release..
The state medical examiner will determine the man's identity and cause of death.
Firefighters responded to the fire shortly before 9:30 p.m. at RJ Templeton Associates, a commercial parts warehouse in the 2700 block of Southeast Long Street.
The fire's flames were visible from miles away.
First arriving crews attacked the east side of the building and prevented the loss of several homes, firefighters said. Still, some surrounding homes, properties and cars were damaged.
The fire was mostly knocked down by 11 p.m.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Anyone who has information related to the fire is asked to contact investigators at 503-823-4676.
