PORTLAND, Ore. — A car-sharing company is leaving Portland at the end of this month. Free2move announced that it will stop service in the Rose City on Nov. 30.
In an email sent to customers on Monday, Free2move said they made their decision based on two factors: rising operation costs and the challenge of enticing more Portlanders to use car-sharing on a regular basis.
"The first being the rising infrastructure complexities in the US transportation sector which have resulted in much higher costs to sustain our car-sharing operations here, and the second being the difficult reality that although we invested a lot in convincing people in Portland to integrate car-sharing into their usual mobility behavior, we did not convince enough people to do so," Free2move said in the email.
The company added that it was saddened by their decision and apologized to customers for the inconvenience.
People who use the car-sharing service will be able to make their last trip on Nov. 29, with all trips ending no later than 11:59 p.m. The company said there may be fewer vehicles available for rides leading up to that date.
Free2move launched service in Portland in 2021. It also operates in Washington, D.C., Paris and Madrid. Customers can reserve and rent vehicles for as little as a few minutes or hours, and as long as days or months.
