TIGARD, Ore. — Nine residents have been displaced after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Tigard, according to Tualatin Fire and Rescue (TVF&R).
On Thursday evening, around 7:33 p.m., TVF&R, with Lake Oswego Fire and Rescue, responded to reports of an apartment building fire at 6100 Southwest Bonita Road, according to a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
TVF&R said the fire was caused by a battery from an electric motorcycle, which was in a ground-level unit. The motorcycle's battery pack had been popping and smoking, though was not charging at the time. The battery, though, burst into flames.
Crews worked to search the two units on fire and put out the flames, as well as seeing how many units are habitable.
The two-alarm fire started at the bottom unit and spread to the top unit, Stefan Myers with TVF&R said.
No one was inside at the time, but both units have been heavily damaged, according to Myers. There are some smoke and water damage to other nearby units, but the majority of property damage was in the two main units on fire.
A firefighter was also checked out due to medical complaints and transported to the hospital as a precaution, according to TVF&R. He has been released.
This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
