GERVAIS, Ore. — A coyote that bit a man at a farm near Gervais earlier this week has tested positive for rabies.

The man said he and an acquaintance shot the coyote after it walked up to him, sniffed and then bit him on the leg. The man sought medical treatment and was given a series of injections and released.

Members of the Marion County Environmental Health team collected the coyote from the site and took it to the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory for testing. Tests confirmed the animal had rabies.

Only three coyotes have tested positive for rabies in the past 10 years in Oregon, according to Rick Sherman, the Marion County Environmental Health Program Supervisor.
