MILWAUKIE, Ore. — The Milwaukie Police Department has a new K-9, a 2-year-old fox red lab/golden retriever named Flora. What makes this K-9 unique, though, is that she's trained to locate cell phones and other electronic devices that store data.

Flora is one of just a few K-9s across the state of Oregon certified to detect electronic storage devices (ESD).

She'll primarily be used in criminal cases that require the seizure of electronic devices that store data that can be used as evidence, including cell phones and removable memory. She can even locate electronic devices in "several feet of moving water," the Milwaukie Police Department said.

Flora is trained to recognize a specific chemical that's used in the manufacture of these kinds of devices.

"The demand is high for investigators to have a resource that can locate these electronic storage items that can often be very small and easy to conceal," the department said in a statement.

In addition to her work with the Milwaukie Police Department, she'll also be available to help in ESD detection assignments for other law enforcement agencies across the Pacific Northwest.

Flora is also a certified service dog who was first trained to be an emotional support dog for veterans.
