PORTLAND, Ore. — Alek Skarlatos won the Republican primary for Oregon's 4th Congressional district with 86% of the vote.
“I’m very honored to have earned the trust of the Republicans of Southwest Oregon,” said Skarlatos. “I want to thank my great team and we plan on taking this great momentum into the general election.”
He will face incumbent Democrat Peter DeFazio in November.
Skarlatos served in the U.S. National Guard. He and four others stopped an armed terrorist in 2015 on a Paris-bound train traveling from Amsterdam. That act earned him several awards and medals around the world including the Soldier's Medal.
Skarlatos wrote a book entitled 15:17 to Paris: The True Story of A Terrorist, a Train, and Three American Heroes about the incident. It was also turned into a movie that portrayed the attack. Skarlatos starred as himself.
According to a release, Alek stays active by advocating for responsible forest management in Southern Oregon. He lives in Roseburg, where he spends his free time hiking and exploring.
