MULTNOMAH COUNTY, Ore. — Hikers were escorted out from trails near Multnomah Falls on Friday due to rocks falling in the area.

The rockfall was happening between Benson Bridge and the first switchback at Multnomah Falls, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

In a Facebook post shortly before noon, the Forest Service said about 10 hikers had been given hard hats and were being escorted out. A few hikers were above the rockfall.

ALERT: Active rockfall is happening between Benson Bridge and the first switchback at Multnomah Falls. Forest Service staff are escorting hikers out with hard hats, about 10 so far, with a few more...

The short hike up to Benson Bridge remains open.

Once the trail is clear, the entire Wahkeena-Multnomah loop will be closed, officials said. When the rain stops, the Forest Service will send experts to assess the situation.

The loop was reopened last year after being closed following the Eagle Creek Fire in 2017.
