TUALATIN VALLEY, Ore. — At least two were in critical condition and several more were injured after a crash involving seven cars on Interstate 5 Tuesday afternoon, according to Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue (TVF&R).

Multiple callers reported the crash at 3:55 p.m. on the Interstate 5 northbound Nyberg Street off-ramp, saying that one car was on top of another car and a driver was trapped. But when Tualatin police arrived, they informed firefighters that multiple vehicles had been involved and that another person was trapped in a vehicle found lying its side.

The two people who were trapped in the two separate cars had to be extricated, with TVF&R's truck and heavy rescue crews having to stabilize the cars with struts and shoring devices, said TVF&R.

One person in the overturned car was rapidly extricated, then transported to a trauma center in critical condition. The other person in the car on its side took more time to be extricated and was also transported in critical condition.

Crews rescued people in the order of most critical, pulling a hose line as gas and fumes were leaking from multiple vehicles. The rest of the people in the four other vehicles had minor injuries and did not require transportation to a hospital, TVF&R said.

Oregon State Police will be investigating the cause of the crash, said TVF&R.
