MARION COUNTY, Oregon — A 5-year-old boy is dead after falling into a lake in rural Marion County, according to a statement from the county sheriff's office.

On Monday, just before 8 a.m., deputies responded to the Dunlap Lake Recreational Area after it was reported a boy had fallen into the water and had been found in the lake by his father.

Idanha-Detroit Fire District, Lyons Ambulance Service and Marion County Sheriff’s Office first responders arrived. Though life-saving efforts were attempted, the 5-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Marion County Medical Examiner’s Office was also called to the Dunlap Lake Recreational Area to help deputies with the investigation.

"We offer our condolences to the child’s family during this difficult time," the sheriff's office said. "Deputies want to remind visitors to recreational areas in Marion County to remain vigilant around water ways and encourage the use of life jackets."
