SALEM, Ore. — A man broke into an apartment in Salem and shot another man Sunday morning before leading police on a pursuit that ended when he shot himself and crashed his car through a restaurant, the Salem Police Department reported. Both men died.
On Monday, police identified the shooter as 21-year-old Etrine Trent Shively. Police identified the victim as Antonio Castilleja, also 21. Both were from Salem.
At 6:25 a.m. Sunday, police said Shively forced his way into an apartment unit, located near the intersection of Liberty Road South and Browning Avenue South, and shot and killed Castilleja. He then left the apartment complex and drove away.
Witnesses told responding officers that they heard an argument followed by the sounds of gunfire and then saw a man driving off in a car. They described the vehicle to officers who later spotted it traveling north on Commercial Street Southeast.
During the pursuit, police said Shively shot himself, lost control of the vehicle and crashed through two businesses, landing in a Jack in the Box restaurant in the area of Commercial Street Southeast and Royvonne Avenue Southeast. The crash happened around 6:30 a.m., about two miles away from the apartment where Castilleja was shot.
Police said Shively and Castilleja knew each other because of "their romantic involvement with a woman," but said they couldn't determine a motive for the killing due to Shively's death.
During the investigation, Commercial Street was closed between Boone Road and Hilfiker Lane Southeast for four hours.
