PORTLAND, Ore. — One person died in a house fire Tuesday morning in North Portland, Portland Fire and Rescue (PF&R) reported.
At 6:43 a.m., fire crews responded to reports of a house fire on North Schofield Street between Delaware Avenue and Brandon Avenue. When crews first arrived, the fire was small, with light smoke coming out of a second-floor window, PF&R said.
Firefighters were told there was a person still inside the home, so they entered the house, found the person and brought them out. The person died from injuries sustained in the fire, said Portland Fire Public Information Officer Rick Graves.
There were many other occupants of the home, Graves said, who came out of the house from different locations. He said he didn't know if the occupants were owners or renters. There were no reports of animals inside the home.
Graves said the house was full of heavy clutter, which slowed firefighters as they entered the home. "Hoarder-like conditions," he said. There was minimal fire damage to the structure of the house itself, Graves said, because the fire was mostly contained to the clutter of objects inside the home.
The fire was put out shortly after 7 a.m.
North Schofield Street will be closed for a few hours during the investigation, Graves said.
While it's unclear at this time if there were working smoke detectors inside the home, Graves reminded people that smoke detectors save lives. He said people should have smoke detectors inside their homes and regularly check them to make sure they're properly functioning.
This is a developing story and will be updated when more information is made available.
