PORTLAND, Ore. – An Oregon research group released a list of potentially dangerous toys just as the holiday shopping season kicked into high gear.
The Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group (OSPIRG) identified 24 toys that could pose toxic, ingestion or choking hazards. They included several popular characters including Dora the Explorer (backpack) and Hello Kitty (bracelet and hair clip accessory set).
On Wednesday, OSPIRG displayed many of the toys at Randall Children's Hospital to bring attention to the possible dangers.
"We should be able to trust that the toys we buy are safe," said OSPIRG campaign organizer Alice Morrison. "Until that's the case, parents need to watch out for common hazards when shopping for toys."
Some of the toys tested for unsafe levels of lead, chromium and phthalates. Others were too small for the ages of children recommended to play with the toy, or were too loud and could cause hearing loss.
Many of the toys were still on store shelves even after the report was released.
