'It’s not normal, it's over the top for us': Temperatures drop on Oregon Coast after breaking records

Temps are winding down but Wednesday proved to be a scorcher on the Coast.

SEASIDE, Oregon — The heatwave is starting to wind down!

It was still hot in the valley Wednesday night, but the temperatures have cooled off a bit since Tuesday.

The Oregon Coast saw a dramatic shift and about 20 degrees cooler temperatures after breaking records. Temperatures on the coast were extreme for the area, hitting between the 90s and 100s on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the high was around 70 degrees in Seaside. It was nice in town, but closer to the water the coastal winds picked up and it got chilly. That didn’t stop anyone from packing the beaches up and soaking in the what are the final days of summer break for many.

Our crew spent the day in Seaside Wednesday and repeatedly heard from people: “you should have been here yesterday!”

It was the Oregon Coast's version of "the dog days of summer," although it was really just one day of heat.

“Yesterday was crazy, it was quite warm. It’s dropped a little bit. It was what, 85 to 90 degrees or something like that down here, which is not normal for us. We call that our one day of summer which is always fabulous,” Leann Gabler, who lives in Lincoln City, said. “It’s not normal, it's over the top for us!”

For the Oregon Coast, it was a scorcher!

“I've never known the beach in Oregon where the sand was so hot you can't go barefoot. And yesterday was one of those days. Like the movie '10' where you go hot, hot, hot!”

Hot temps came at a prime time; some local school districts are still on break and kids don't return to school until next week. So they were in Seaside soaking up their final slice of summer.

“We are part of the Beaverton School District and we don’t start till next week so we wanted one last hurrah. So we came out to the beach and looked at the weather beforehand. And so we were here yesterday and today and it was perfect yesterday - it was hot, we actually got to go in the water and it felt nice and refreshing,” one mom told us at a Seaside ice cream shop. “But today it’s enjoyable to be out on the sand and if you go in the water it feels a little chilly. Today is sweatshirt weather, yesterday was no sweatshirt required whatsoever.”

Wednesday, Oregonians told us, was just right.

“We were joking about with some other seaside people like if people come right now during this weather and they haven't ever been here before they're going to think, man, I want to move here. Just wait until October, man, you'll never see the sun. But it's sure beautiful when it's beautiful,” a local musician said.

The hundreds of people soaking it up on the sand clearly agreed.
