MCMINNVILLE, Ore. — A year after a pregnant McMinnville woman was nearly beaten to death, police are still looking for her attacker.
Traci Spurgeon was beaten outside her McMinnville home in the early morning hours of May 12, 2018.
Spurgeon’s ex-husband, Bruce McGuire, said Spurgeon has come a long way in her recovery, but they’re still waiting for closure and justice.
“It's been a struggle,” said McGuire.
Spurgeon, who shares three kids with McGuire, was pregnant at the time of the attack. Spurgeon’s new baby boy, Kaiden, is now almost 7 months old.
“He's definitely the miracle baby,” said McGuire. “Whoever did this tried to kill him and also my ex-wife.”
The attack left multiple cracks in Spurgeon’s skull. She lost sight in her right eye and her sense of smell.
McMinnville Police said they are still investigating the case and hoping to make an arrest.
“It's very frustrating,” said McGuire, adding that he appreciates everything police are doing.
Volunteers posted flyers around town showing Spurgeon’s face, before and after the attack. A local charity is offering a $2,500 reward for an arrest in the case.
Police wouldn’t say if they believed the attack was random or targeted. To further complicate matters, McGuire said three weeks after the attack, baby Kaiden's father disappeared.
“Jermaine Streeter is his dad,” said McGuire. “He just left.”
McGuire said Spurgeon is healing, slowly. She's also back in school and trying to move on for herself and her children. McGuire said until police arrest whoever attacked Spurgeon, that won't truly be possible.
“I feel like there's people out there who actually know what happened and they're too much of a coward to come forward or they're just afraid to come forward,” said McGuire. “I would say don't be afraid, just try to help her have peace.”
