Tent City, USA is a KGW investigative project that explores who Portland’s homeless tent campers are and what led to the proliferation of tent camps across the city. Tent City, USA was reported and produced by KGW's investigative team: Kyle Iboshi, Maggie Vespa, John Tierney, Sara Roth and Gene Cotton. Infographics and multimedia design by Jeff Patterson.
For many homeless Portland residents who live in tents, camps provide a necessary alternative to shelters or other types of temporary housing. But for some residents, the proliferation of tent camps has incited anger as campers encroach into neighborhoods.
Some neighbors fear for their safety and have considered moving to get away from camps. Others wish they could do more to help the hundreds of homeless people who feel they have no option other than sleeping inside a tent in the city of Portland.
How does homeless tent camping in Portland affect you? What do you wish the city would do? Are there solutions that leaders have not yet broached?
