NEWPORT, Ore. – If you’re planning to go to Newport’s Nye Beach, don’t go into the ocean, or any other nearby water.
The Oregon Health Authority issued a health advisory due to higher than normal levels of fecal bacteria found in the water.
Contact with the ocean or surrounding creeks and pools could cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections and other illnesses, the OHA said. Children and the elderly may be more vulnerable to the bacteria.
Neighboring beaches are not affected by the advisory.
The increased fecal bacteria can come from sources such as stormwater runoff, sewer overflows, animal waste and failing septic systems, according to the OHA.
