PORTLAND, Ore. — The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is now releasing the number of coronavirus cases in each of Oregon’s ZIP codes.
In an email on Tuesday evening, OHA said the goal of releasing the data is to help people better understand the extent of community spread of COVID-19.
“We are committed to being transparent and accountable to all the communities we serve, especially those hardest hit by the pandemic.”
They also said they want to acknowledge “the degree to which data, particularly by ZIP code, may contribute to or reinforce stigma and discrimination in communities of color and under-served neighborhoods.”
Reports have shown that communities of color in Oregon have been harder hit by the virus.

In late March, OHA said the state did not have test results broken down at the ZIP code level. They have been releasing data daily by county.
The lack of specific data made it difficult to assess which communities were being the hardest hit, information that could help first responders and health care workers.
