These Washington schools are closed for coronavirus concerns

Gov. Jay Inslee ordered Puget Sound metro K-12 schools to be closed for six weeks starting March 17.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee ordered all private, public and charter K-12 schools in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties to be closed March 17 to April 24 as the state works to stop the spread of coronavirus. 

The edict affects 600,000 children. More orders could come in the following days for schools in surrounding counties.

KING 5 is working to keep this schools list up-to-date ahead of the six-week closure, but the best policy is to check directly with your school district or school's website to confirm. 

Monday, March 16

Friday, March 13

  • Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett will close school until March 31.
  • The Bellevue School District will be closed starting Friday, March 13 through March 27. There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Bellevue at this time. The school is working on a plan to support remote learning. 
  • Eastern Washington University joined Western Washington University in switching to online learning effective immediately. This will be in effect for the rest of the academic school year.
  • Monroe School District is closing starting Friday, March 13. The school is anticipated to be closed through April 24.
  • Sultan School District is closing beginning Friday, March 13 through April 10. 
  • Eastside Catholic School closes Friday, March 13. The school will transition to digital learning March 16. There are tentative plans to resume normal operations April 20. 
  • Vashon Island School District closed until April 24. 
  • All schools in the Snohomish School District will be closed on Tuesday, March 10 after an employee with the transportation department tested positive for coronavirus. The district will be closed until at least April 24.

Thursday, March 12

  • The Bainbridge Island school district is closed on March 12 and March 13 to prepare for possible longterm closures due to coronavirus. 
  • Lake Washington school district will close schools through March 27. Resources for at-home learning will be made available, meals for children will be provided at school sites and childcare will be made available. More details to follow. 
  • Seattle Public Schools will close for at least two weeks beginning March 12. The closure, which includes classes, childcare, health services and enrichment will last "until further notice." The district will release additional information on March 13, according to a letter sent to families.
  • The Shoreline Public Schools District will be closed starting March 12 through March 27. This also includes the cancellation of sporting events. Food will be offered for students who need it. The district will post more information on their website. 
  • DigiPen Institute of Technology, based in Redmond, has moved to online cout of an abundance of caution for the safety of its students, faculty and staff. In-person classes will resume on March 23.
  • Lakewood School District is closed through April 24.

Wednesday, March 11

Several other schools will remain closed Wednesday. Check the list below for previous and continuing closures, or visit the website for your school or school district to confirm.

Tuesday, March 10:

  • Four Tacoma schools will be closed on Tuesday. Individuals have tested presumptive positive at Sheridan and Lowell elementary schools and Wilson High School. Sheridan and Lowell elementary schools will be closed all week. Lyon Elementary and Wilson High School will be closed Tuesday, along with all athletics and before and after school activities. 
  • North Seattle College: Alternate modes of instruction begin on March 10 through the winter quarter. Campus services and offices remain open,
  • South Central College: In-person classes are suspended through the winter quarter. Instruction will resume on Tuesday using "alternative formats."
  • All schools in the Snohomish School District will be closed on Tuesday, March 10 after an employee with the transportation department tested positive for coronavirus. The school will be closed for cleaning. All athletic and other activities have been canceled. 
  • Bellevue Children’s Academy in Bellevue – closed March 10. School has moved to online learning.
  • Bellevue College in Bellevue – classes are moving online; offices and housing remain open. Students should check email and Canvas for further instructions.
  • Bertschi School in Seattle – closed out of an abundance of caution from March 9 through March 27. Distance learning program begins March 16.
  • Cascadia College in Bothell – moving to online courses for the remainder of the winter quarter.
  • Evergreen School in Shoreline – closed from March 9 until April 12. Moving to online learning.
  • Green River College in Auburn – classes will be completed in a manner that reduces face-to-face meetings until the end of the winter quarter. All GRC locations remain open. Students should check their GRC email and Canvas for details from instructors. 
  • Hazen High School in Renton will remain closed through Thursday, March 19. The school closed last week after a student tested positive for coronavirus
  • Lakeside School in Seattle – closed from March 9 until April 13, 2020. Lakeside School will be functioning under its remote learning plan from March 9 through April 3.
  • Lake Washington Institute of Technology in Kirkland – Moving to remote operations until March 20, 2020.
  • Pacific Lutheran University will transition all regular classes to distance-learning from March 10 until the end of spring break (March 30). The campus will still be open but most classes will be held online.
  • Mary Lyon Elementary in Tacoma – closed through March 12 for cleaning after a staff member tested presumptive positive for coronavirus.
  • All Meridian School District schools – closed Tuesday, March 10 and Wednesday, March 11 for a deep cleaning of school buildings and buses. All district activities, athletics, and meetings are also canceled. Staff will remain home.
  • Northshore School District schools moved to online learning.
  • Renton Technical College in Renton – classes canceled on March 10; student services and offices are open.
  • Seattle Academy of Arts & Sciences in Seattle – closed for remote learning. Onsite classes scheduled to resume April 20.
  • Shoreline Community College will be holding most classes online through March 25. There have been no reported cases at the college.
  • Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon - all college locations will be closed to students and the general public until Sunday, March 15.
  • Stanwood School District will not have classes on March 11-13. All school activities and athletics are canceled. 
  • Willows Preparatory School in Redmond - closed March 10. School has moved to online learning.
  • Woodside Elementary in Everett - closed Tuesday, March 10 after a student started exhibiting signs of coronavirus and has a parent who tested positive for the virus. The student did not attend school last week. The school will receive an intense disinfecting.

Monday, March 9:

  • Bellevue Children’s Academy in Bellevue – closed March 9-10. School has moved to online learning.
  • Bertschi School in Seattle – closed out of an abundance of caution from March 9 through March 27. Distance learning program begins March 16.
  • The Bush School in Seattle – closed for faculty training on remote schooling.
  • Eastside Preparatory School in Seattle – conducting online learning from Monday, March 9 until March 27, 2020.
  • Echo Lake Elementary in the Shoreline Public Schools District - closed March 9 for deep cleaning after a parent was diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Evergreen School in Shoreline – closed from March 9 until April 12. Moving to online learning.
  • Green River College in Auburn – All classes across GRC locations are canceled for Monday, March 9, 2020. Beginning Tuesday, classes will be completed in a manner that reduces face-to-face meetings until the end of the winter quarter.
  • Hazen High School in Renton will remain closed through Thursday, March 19. The school closed last week after a student tested positive for coronavirus. 
  • Lakeside School in Seattle – closed from March 9 until April 13, 2020. Lakeside School will be functioning under its remote learning plan from March 9 through April 3.
  • Lake Washington Institute of Technology in Kirkland – Moving to remote operations until March 20, 2020.
  • Tacoma Public Schools will close Mary Lyon Elementary after the Pierce County Health Department notified the superintendent that a staff member at the school has tested presumptive positive for coronavirus. The school will undergo a deep cleaning.
  • Pacific Lutheran University - classes canceled for faculty training. Remote learning begins Tuesday, March 10, 2020.
  • St. Thomas School in Medina will begin remote learning on Monday. No students have tested positive for coronavirus.
  • Northshore School District is beginning online learning on Monday.
  • The University of Washington will not have classes in person through the end of the winter quarter on March 20. The campus will remain open. Normal class operations will begin on March 30, pending public health guidance.
  • Seattle Academy of Arts & Sciences in Seattle – closed for remote learning.
  • Seattle University - canceled in-person classes through March 20. The campus will remain open.
  • Seattle Pacific University - moving to an online format starting March 9. Campus offices and services will remain open to accommodate employees and students living on campus.
  • Villa Academy in Seattle – closed to allow staff to plan for potential distance learning for students.
  • Willows Preparatory School in Redmond - closed March 9-10. School has moved to online learning.
  • Woodside Elementary in Everett will be closed Monday, March 9 and Tuesday, March 10 after a student started exhibiting signs of coronavirus and has a parent who tested positive for the virus. The student did not attend school last week. The school will receive an intense disinfecting.

What are coronavirus symptoms?

The symptoms of coronavirus are similar to the flu or colds. Symptoms include a fever, cough, and shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, according to the Washington State Department of Health.

The severity of symptoms ranges significantly. Some cases are very mild with symptoms similar to the common cold, and some cases are more like severe pneumonia that require hospitalization. Most deaths have been reported in older adults who had other health conditions, according to DOH.

Symptoms may appear as soon as two days after being exposed to the coronavirus or as long as 14 days.
