University of Oregon senior obtains prestigious Rhodes Scholarship

Nayantara Arora was one of the 32 recipients in the U.S, and hopes to focus on chronic nervous system disorders to help people with Alzheimer's.

EUGENE, Ore. — For the first time in over 15 years, the University of Oxford has awarded its prestigious scholarship to an Oregon Duck.

University of Oregon senior Nayantara Arora is one of the 32 U.S. recipients of the scholarship, which funds two to three years of study at the University of Oxford. Arora plans to pursue two master's degrees with the money: one for global health and the other in international health and tropical medicine.

"I think that those two degrees will give me exactly what I want in my career," Arora told KGW. "The fact is we live in an aging world ... of chronic nervous system disorders."

Right now, Arora is majoring in neuroscience with minors in chemistry and global health. She said she wants to focus on chronic nervous system disorders to learn how data analysis and biomarkers can help people with Alzheimer's.

"I'm super thankful that the Rhodes Scholarship is enabling me to be able to pursue the study at Oxford which I definitely would not be able to without the scholarship," she said.

Arora said she's excited for the next chapter in her education and research, thanking her professors and mentors for their help along the way.
