Private high schools in Portland proper dominate a 2025 list that ranks those institutions on such factors as academics, college preparedness and athletics.

Twelve of the schools on the Pittsburgh-based Niche.com list of Top Private High Schools in the metro are in Portland. The figure includes six out of the top seven in the overall rankings. Two of the schools are are in Washington.

Niche.com issued its schools ratings in time for the 2024-25 school year. The ratings are based on self-reported data, as private schools aren't required to report to the Department of Education (which tracks data from public schools).

The self-reporting may manifest in one statistic in particular: Among the 20, among the top 25, Portland-area schools that reported graduation rates, 18 reported their rate was 100%. Two others said their rates exceeded 95%.

The rankings are based on weighted results, which is why a school that gets, say, an A-plus might outrank another school.

Here are a few other nuggets from the Niche.com results:

  • The average tuition cost is about $16,100. The range among those that reported their cost was free (Rosemary Anderson, in Portland) and $43,800 (Catlin Gable and Oregon Episcopal).
  • The average school size is 395 students.
  • The three most diverse schools in the top private high school rankings, according to Niche.com, are De La Salle North Catholic, Islam School of Muslim Educational Trust and Columbia Christian School.
